U21 North West Shield Final; Scardán Mór

Sligo             0-8

Fermanagh   0-7

Sligo finished off their North West Cup campaign with a win over Fermanagh in the Shield final played at the Sligo Centre-of-Excellence. It was a repeat of Wednesday’s group pairing when Fermanagh came out on top with nine points to spare. But this time Paul Taylor’s side were the victors in a hard fought contest with the Ulster-men. The playing conditions were not ideal and it was Fermanagh who played with the wind in the opening half. The visitors raced into a two-point lead with corner forwards David Teague and Ryan Maguire on the mark for Pete McGrath side. Sligo got on the board after six minutes with a Kenny Gavigan point but Fermanagh went back in front by two points when Eoin Mc Manus pointed his first free of the match. The Yeats’ men levelled matters with great points from corner back Jude McGarry and from Cathal Henry. McManus converted two further frees amid the persistent rain to leave the score at the break 0-05 to 0-03 in favour of the Farney men.

Sligo introduced Cian Breheny at the start of the second half but Eoin McManus converted another free and the visitors now led by three. When Dylan Kilgallon was introduced he made his mark with a point and this was followed by a good score from Kevin Henry to reduce the gap to a single point.  Fermanagh were struggling against the breeze in the second half but another free from Mc Manus had them ahead again by two points (0-07; 0-05). However the Ulster-men failed to score for the remainder of the match. Points from Michael Casey and Kevin Henry had the sides level with three minutes left on the clock. Both sides pushed hard for a further score but it was Sligo who produced the winner courtesy of a Cian Breheny point.
