FUREY’S COACHES SFL DIVISION 2

Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 1-12

St John’s 0-4

Drumcliffe/Rosses Point maintained their 100% start to the Furey's Coaches SFL Divison 2 with a comprehensive 1-12 to 0-4 win over an understrength St John's at Oxfield.

These teams were both relegated from Division 1 last season - but were unbeaten in Division 2 going into Saturday evening’s game. However, St John’s, who included ex-Sligo Rovers footballer Alan Keane in their full forward line, were missing a number of first team regulars, and never really got to grips with the contest.

A Niall Canning point from play for the home side was the game’s only score for the opening 10 minutes. But once Drumcliffe/Rosses Point began to find their men, the scores started to flow with Paul Logan and Neil Ewing both finishing enterprising attacking moves. At the back, they managed to keep an out-of-sorts St John’s attack scoreless in the opening half, building up a 0-7 to 0-0 interval lead. The margin might have been wider but for an excellent save by St John’s goalkeeper Jamie McGovern to block a Neil Ewing goal-bound effort midway through the half.

There were brief signs of a St John’s revival after the restart with Fiachra Grennan and Ian Rossiter slotting over some nice points

However, DRP responded well through points from Niall Canning and John Harvey. Then, came the penalty in the 47th minute when Canning was upended as he went for goal.  The spot kick was converted by Paul Logan, who showed good composure to net again at the second time of asking after the referee Conor Conway had ordered the penalty to be retaken. Logan, scorer of 1-3 on the evening, added another free before the end to ensure the home side ran out comfortable 11 point winners.

The result makes it four wins out of four in Division 2 for the north Sligo club.
