This is well and truly the business end of the season for our senior men’s footballers as they begin their 2016 Belfry Senior Club Championship campaign with an opening group fixture against Tubbercurry this Saturday evening in Connolly Park, Collooney, at 7:30pm. A big show of support from the club would be appreciated for this important fixture. The seniors are in Group 1 this year along with Tubber, defending county champions St Mary’s and Coolera/Strandhill. Three teams will qualify for the knockout stages of the championship with the bottom-placed side entering a relegation play-off.

The seniors warmed up for their championship opener last Sunday with an important 3-13 to 1-10 success over Bunninadden in Division 2 of the league. The win ensures our place in the Division 2 final with the eventual winners earning promotion to Division 1 next season.

137 participants took part in the annual GAA Kellogg’s Cúl Camp at Oxfield last week – a record for the club. Thanks to all the Sligo GAA coaches (including a number of our own senior players) who led the week superbly. Special thanks also to our own Cúl Camp coordinator Mary Power for all her time and organisation.

Another ‘high’ for the club was recorded at Markievicz Park when the Benbulben Gaels U12 hurlers captured the A league title with a thrilling 0-12 to 0-11 victory over a gallant St Mary’s side. There was little to choose between either side over the four quarters and both sets of players served up a memorable contest for all who were there to see it.

Our ladies footballers are due to resume their intermediate championship campaign with a group match against St Mary’s on Sunday morning at 10am.

Hard luck to the girls U16 footballers who put up a gutsy display against Shamrock Gaels in the ‘A’ league final against Shamrock Gaels at Coola last Monday evening before eventually going down on a final scoreline of 2-11 to 1-7.

Well played our U12 girls who have started their championship campaign with two impressive victories to date over Calry/St Joseph’s and Geevagh.

Our girls minor footballers begin their championship campaign this Wednesday away to St Nathy’s at 7:30pm.

The U14 boys footballers start their championship campaign this Friday evening with a quarter-final against Curry (away) at 7pm.

The first draw for our new Super Club Lotto will be made at the end of the week. All tickets should be returned ASAP to the Fundraising Committee.

Our Club BBQ will take place on Saturday, August 27th in Oxfield. This promises to be a fun-filled event for all the family. Keep the date free.

If you are heading off on holidays at this time of year, we want your holiday snaps! Send us a picture of you or family members in your DRP club jersey/top and we’ll publish a selection of the best images on the club Facebook page. There’ll be ‘brownie points’ for photos in front of tourist landmarks, either at home or abroad.
