Senior Football

St Johns seniors were in action in Round 2 of the Division 2 league on Good Friday evening in Stenson Park, Cuilbeg and suffered their first defeat of the season when an understrength team went down to a strong Geevagh  outfit on a 1-9 to 2-8 scoreline. Geevagh led by 1-5 to 0-3 at half time and try as they might the home side could not make much headway against a determined visiting side in the second half. They badly missed the steadying influence of some players who were unable to get off work in Dublin for a Friday evening game. St Johns line-out was N O’Donnell;  E Roche, N Hayes, A Clerkin;  C Harrison, P Mc Namara(0-1), R Fahy(0-1); S Stenson(0-2), O Cox(0-1); C Keaney, B Mc Gowan(1-0), C Jordan(0-1); C Greene(0-2), F Grennan(0-1), R Gordon; C Mc Govern, S Kilcawley, K Sweeney, C Hough, A Kerr,J Reilly.

The senior team got back to winning ways on Sunday at 12.30 in Round 3 of the League when, despite absentees through injury from Fridays encounter and other events, they managed to overcome the challenge of visitors St Farnans at a wind-swept Stenson Park by the narrowest of margins on a 0-10 to 0-9 scoreline. St Farnans got off to a good start and led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time and indeed this lead could have been much greater but for two great saves by St Johns goalkeeper Noel O’Donnell. The second half was a ding-dong battle but eventually the home team took the lead very near the end with a David Rooney pointed free. St Johns panel on duty was N O’Donnell; E Roche, D Burke, S Kilcawley; R Fahy, P Mc Namara, N Hayes; D Rooney(0-5), J Murphy(0-1); C Keaney, C Greene(0-1), C Jordan; F Grennan(0-1), R Mc Manus(0-1), R Gordon(0-1); N Walsh, C Hough, C Mc Govern.
