Junior
Girls
The Junior Ladies' second round tie with
Owenmore Gaels ended with defeat on Easter Sunday. Despite some strong
performances from Ruth Goodwin and Ciara Redmond in midfield we just were not
strong enough to cope with a more experienced opposition. Second half
substitutes Ellen Given, Aislinn Doggett and Ellen Prior were effective and a fine
Ciara Healy goal from a Pamela Higgins pass raised the spirits. Unfortunately
it also led to a nasty ankle injury for Pamela, and we wish her a speedy
recovery. Team; Sarah Lindsay, Jessica Halloran, Cara Gilligan, Kaela Kerrigan,
Ciara McCormack, Laura Joyce, Claire Stenson, Ciara Redmond (0-02), Ruth
Goodwin, Eilis Callaghan, Catherine Porter, Attracta Halloran, Ciara Healy
(1-00), Pamela Higgins, Lauren McGarry, subs used, Eimear Joyce, Ellen Given,
Aislinn Doggett, Gráinne Redmond, Ellen Prior (0-01), Eimear McCallion.
Round three of the league saw the girls travel
to Skreen to play St. Pat’s. It was the first time that some of the more senior
players took to the pitch this year, with Jacqui Mulligan making her debut for
the club. From the throw-in the girls were on the offensive and went into a two
point lead thanks to Ruth Goodwin and a Ciara Healy free. Despite dominating
possession however, we were caught in defense a number of times leading to the
home side goaling four times. To their credit, the girls played some flowing
football, led by Jacqui Mulligan at centre back and replied with a goal from
Laura Joyce and points from Catherine Porter (0-01), Laura-Ann Laffey (0-03 (2
frees) and a second Ciara Healy effort. Half time came with the girls trailing
4-01 to 1-07. The second half was a tight tense affair with scores hard to come
by. Two more Laura-Ann Laffey pointed frees and a well worked score from Jacqui
Mulligan were to be the only flags raised, to 1-04 from St. Pats. Ultimately,
this was a game of missed opportunities, but we can take solace from the fact
that goal chances were created and on another day may well have been converted.
Other positives can be taken from this game too, notably the performance of
Jacqui Mulligan at centre back who brought an energy an intensity to the team
that lifted others around her. Kaela Kerrigan and Claire Stenson were also
impressive in defence, while Ruth Goodwin and Laura Joyce ran tirelessly in
midfield. Laura Ann Laffey led the attack with support from Attracta Halloran,
Ciara Healy, Catherine Porter and Eilis Callaghan. Next is a home match with
Curry on Sunday. Team; Sarah Lindsay, Ciara McCormack (Gráinne Redmond), Kaela
Kerrigan, Jessica Halloran (Nadine Deering), Jacqui Mulligan, Claire Stenson,
Laura Joyce, Ruth Goodwin, Attracta Halloran, Catherine Porter (Ellen Given),
Laura-Ann Laffey, Ciara Healy, (Aislinn Doggett), Eilis Callaghan (Lauren
McGarry); subs, Eimear McCallion, Eimear Joyce.

U-12 Hurling
The Coolera/ Strandhill U12 hurlers played their first match
of the season against Benbulben Gaels last Tuesday in
Ransboro. The game started with the more experienced Benbulben attack piling on
the pressure. The Coolera/ Strandhill defence was a match with some fine
tackling and clearances from Tadgh Dogget and Aidan Moran in the full back
line, while the half back line of Oisin Whelan, Shane O’Loughlin and Kevin Davitt
gave a great display of the fine art of hooking and blocking to limit the score
line to 3 points to no score at half time. A few changes allowed the boys take
the game to Benbulben, in the second half, with Oisin Hennessy and Cathal
Gilligan prominent. The boys narrowed the gap to two points. Tommy Kinane
worked hard to keep the sliotar moving forward, and helped to set up Mark Keane
and Jack Feeney with scoring chances. An Aidan O’ Loughlin interception and
pass to Cathal Hughes, set up another opportunity, but unfortunately the chance
went astray. Ultan Bree in goals made two instinctive saves before Benbulben
scored two more points to make the game safe. Ronan Adams showed his
versatility by playing well in defence as well as in the forwards.
Team: Ultan Bree, Tadgh Dogget, Aidan Moran,
Oisin Whelan, Shane O’Loughlin, Kevin Davitt, Oisin Hennessy, Thomas Kinane, Jack
Feeney, Cathal Gilligan, Mark Keane, Ronan Adams, Aidan O’Loughlin and
Cathal Hughes.
U14 girls
The under
14 girls played their first league game of the season against St. Molaise Gaels
on Tuesday 18th of April in Grange.
After a
slow start Coolera/Strandhill settled in to the game with three goals and a point
in quick succession and led by a point at half time 3-01 to 1-06. St Molaise
took the lead early in the second half and despite courageous efforts our girls
were unable to get the goal required to win the match. Overall it was a good
performance with lots of positives, not least of which was the performance in
particular of goalkeeper Susanna Garcia who was making her debut for the club.
Final score; 2-11 to 3-05. Team; Susanna Garcia, Amy Hampson, Ciara Lindsay,
Holly Gilligan, Grace Molloy, Anna Callaghan, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan, Amy
Deering, Beibhinn Harte, Emma O’ Loughlin, Keri Mitchell, Tara Peacock, Enya
Hughes.,subs used; Cliodhna Davitt, Eva White, Mary-Kate McPartland.
Go Games
Our U8 had their first outing against St. Marys on Friday 14th in
Scarden. It was fantastic to have 3 teams lining out and well done to all. Their
next match will be at home to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point tomorrow (Wed. 26th April).
U14 Boys
Our u14 boys got their first win of the
campaign with victory over Tubbercurry at Kilcoyne Park last Friday. On an
ideal evening for football it was the home team that started stronger and got
to the break with a six point cushion. Coolera-Strandhill kept in touch with
goals from Mark McDaniel and Andrew Lynch, and with points from Cormac Correira,
Conor Keane and Cormac Heneghan.
The second half saw fine battling qualities with
Ross Doherty, Ryan Young and Liam Gilligan to the fore. Two players with strong
Tubbercurry connections featured prominently, Naoise Brennan doing well when he
came on and Cormac Murphy bagging himself a hat-rick of goals. Jamie Walsh did
a fine job deputising in goal and with Rory Kinane and Ben Cawley marshalling
the defence superbly, our boys eventually ran out comfortable nine point
winners.
Minor Boys
Our minor side played Coolaney/Mullinabreena at
home on Thursday in round three of the league. In what was a hard fought victory,
a battling, hard working display was needed from the lads who had to overcome a
deficit before winning 3-05 to 0-10. A Seán Coggins goal just before half time
started the comeback and a disciplined defensive laid the foundation for the
win, setting up some great attacking movements. Every player played his part
and management can be extremely happy with every player’s attitude and desire
to work hard. Next up is a local derby away to St Mary's on Thursday at
7pm. All support is appreciated.
U14 Girls Féile
We brought a somewhat depleted squad to
Templeboy to take part in the LGFA Féile on Saturday. Despite this, the girls
acquitted themselves well, losing to group winners Eoghan Rua, but ending with
a very good win over St. Farnan’s. The first match against Eoghan Rua ended
3-05 to 2-02. Our girls started well and but for some missed opportunities
could have gone in at half time leading. Even so, they were well in contention
going into the second half. Goals from Clodagh Martyn and Cliodhna O’ Sullivan
were added to the points from Beibhinn Harte and Shona Dalton, but ultimately
Eoghan Rua ran out winners.
The girls then played hosts St. Farnan’s, and
were quickly on the score sheet thanks to another Cliodhna O’ Sullivan goal.
She added a point between two Shona Dalton points, and thanks to a much
improved team performance, the girls led 1-03 to 0-00 at half time. The second
half saw the home side rally but another point from Shona Dalton settled the
tie 1-04 to 0-02. There were impressive performances, particularly in the
second game, from Cliodhna O’ Sullivan, Grace Molloy, Beibhinn Harte, Cliodhna
Davitt and Shona Dalton. Amy Hampson, Holly Gilligan and Mary-Kate McPartland
defended excellently, while Emma O’ Loughlin, Enya Hughes Ellen Walsh, Anna
Callaghan, Clodagh Martyn worked tirelessly. Nessa O’ Sullivan was reliable in
goals and her distribution was excellent. It’s back to the league for the girls
next, and this experience will serve them well.
