St Johns Kennedy Intermediate
Champions 2017
In
Markievicz Park on Sunday, St Johns recaptured the Sligo Intermediate crown in
our 30th anniversary year, when our boys came back from a torrid
first half to overcome the challenge of a very determined St Farnans team and
win out by 1 – 14 to 0 – 12 in this Kennedy sponsored replay. Having not really
played to their ability in the first half St Johns went in losing by 5 points –
0 – 4 to 0 – 9 for St Farnans, but whatever was said by the management team in
the dressing room during the interval worked wonders and St Johns came out as a
different team. They quickly got into their stride and hauled back the deficit,
helped in no small way when the quick-thinking Tommy Kelly reacted fastest when
an Alan Keane free rebounded of the post and he drove the ball to the net.
After that St Johns were a transformed side and as their confidence grew so did
the quality of their play and in an unbelievable second half they outscored their
West division rivals by 1 – 10 to 0 – 3. After the game the Vice Chairman of
the Sligo Co Board, Johnny Watters presented the Joe McMorrow Cup to the St
Johns captain Niall Walsh. Niall, in a very gracious speech, thanked all the
players, their wives, partners and girlfriends, families and great supporters
for all their help in bringing the team to this title. He dedicated the victory
to the memory of the many St Johns players and supporters who had passed on to
the next world. He paid tribute to the Markievicz Park committee, the referee
and his officials and to the gallant losers St Farnans. He had a special word
of thanks for the management team of Dara McGarty, Michael McNamara, Fergal
Kelly, Gerry Quinn, Ray Henry and Owen McLean who had put in such a great
effort over the last two years and whose dedication and hard work had paid off.
St Johns now go forward to the Connacht Intermediate quarter final where they
will play the Leitrim champions Aughnasheelin on next Sat Oct 20 in the
Markievicz Park with a 2.00pm throw-in time. For a more detailed account of the
game please see the sports reports. ----- A special word of thanks to young
Seamus Casey Junior for doing a video of our game on the web. He made it a
special occasion for our many supporters who were unavoidably absent in such
places as Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, New York, London, Leeds, Dublin and
Donegal to mention but a few. Over 70 people were tuned in to the game.
