The younger squads were out in force last week and showed the skills
they are learning at Saturday morning Coaching. Drumcliffe Rosses Point were the opposition
for boys and girls. The U8 Girls were
having their first match and congratulations to all 18 of them, they have the
makings of a very good side. They don’t
have long to wait for their next match as this Wednesday they take on St Johns
in Cleveragh at 7pm. Our U7/8 boys were in Oxfield on Wednesday
evening to play Drumcliffe Rosses Point. It was a beautiful evening and both teams
played some fantastic football and took some great scores , Our U9/10 boys were also in Oxfield and thanks to our hosts for organising the
evening. All the lads
contributed to a strong team performance, and can look forward with confidence
when we welcome Eastern Harps this Wednesday to Kent Park.
Our U12 boys had contrasting fortunes against Coolera/Strandhill on
Tuesday night last. The division 1 team played some excellent football and were
convincing winners on a scoreline of 24 to 6 while our division 3 boys played
well for periods but in the end fell to a 17-5 defeat to stronger
opponents. On Friday last the U12’s had
a further outing when they travelled to Manorhamilton where we enjoyed two
excellent challenge games. With a break
in the league for a couple of weeks our attention now changes to the upcoming Clifford
cup on Saturday June 2nd. We are looking forward to both our teams being very
competitive in the tournament which hosts Corofin(Galway), Castlebar(Mayo),St
Mary's(Leitrim),Aodh Rua, Four Masters,St.Eunan's(all Donegal) and St. Molaise
Gaels. Everyone's support would be
greatly appreciated on what is always a fantastic day’s football.
The Minor boys overcame Calry/ St Joseph’s in impressive style in their
league semi-final on Friday. We played
some excellent football and ran out comfortable winners on a score of 5-17 to
1-10. We will play Geevagh/ St Michaels in league final this week and all
support will be appreciated
Our U10 girls participated in a
blitz organised by Connacht LGFA at the Connacht Centre of Excellence,
playing Annaghdown, Swinford and CT Gaels. The girls acquitted themselves
brilliantly. They will soon commence matches organised by Sligo LGFA. The U12 girls made the long journey to Castleconnor
to play Eoghan Rua in the A league Semi final.
After an even first quarter Eoghan Rua took control and surged ahead in
Quarter 2 with 6 quick scores without reply. Facing a hill, a vocal home support and a
physically superior side a lot of teams could put the head down, but not these
ladies. They each began to win own
personal battles and won Quarter 3 and Quarter 4. Only for some missed opportunities in Quarter 3
this game could have been won. Disappointment
in losing, but we can be immensely proud of our girls who were playing a high
level game against top opposition. All
is not lost as a shield final in three weeks awaits. A big thank you to all the parents and
families for their unbelievable support.
What an
adventure for the U16 Girls and their management team and supporters. This league has been incredible for its
drama and the quality of the sides involved.
The excitement if anything is even greater with each passing game. Last week, up against the odds, our girls
pulled a fantastic victory over Shamrock Gaels to keep very slim hopes of a
league play-off place alive. It was
then out of our hands and dependent on Tourlestrane pulling off an unlikely
victory in their final match on Tuesday against form side Drumcliffe Rosses
Point. As this match entered extra time
Tourlestrane trailed but unbelievably with a final score the win was secured by
a single point, and a play-off place beckoned for St Marys. This took place last Friday when we travelled
to Tourlestrane, a ground this team had never won in previously. What a game was witnessed and both sides
gave every ounce of effort in a thriller.
Marys were out of the blocks first and quick scoring from both sides was
a feature of the game. We opened a good
gap mid-way through the second half, but this only caused Tourlestrane to throw
everything into the game and narrow the gap to 3 points until Marys finally
delivered what looked like knockout scores.
Yet again Tourlestrane went for the victory, but time and again heroic
goalkeeping from Laoise Treanor and a back line marshalled by Eden Rooney and
Chloe McGowan repelled the South Sligo side.
At full time the scoreline read 8-12 for St Marys to 6-11 for
Tourlestrane and congratulations to both teams on a fantastic contest. St Marys move on to meet Drumcliffe Rosses
Point on Tuesday with the winner taking on Calry in the League final next
weekend.
