St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Many
thanks to all our young stars who turned out in force to represent the club in
this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Having won the Sports Award last year, it
was always going to be a difficult task retaining it, so second place in the
sports section was a great achievement. Well done everyone, and a big thank you
to the parents who joined in on the day.
Club Nursery Programme
The Club Nursery programme continues each Friday in the
Ursuline College from 6pm to 7pm. The programme is open to all children aged
5-8. Registration is online on www.coolerastrandhill.com and includes club top, shorts and socks.
Lotto
Last week's Lotto numbers for a jackpot of €11,000
were 6, 16, 31, 32. There was no winner, nor were ther any Match 3 winners.
Next week’s jackpot is €11,100 . Tickets cost just €2.00 and are available in
Bree's Bar, Coolera House and Keane's Centra or committee members. The
draw takes place each Monday in the clubhouse.
Junior Ladies
The
Junior Ladies got their season underway on St. Patrick’s Day when they play St.
Farnan’s in the Spring Shield in Ransboro Pk. Fielding a young, inexperienced
team, the girls took a while to settle and some early lapses led to the
visitors going into the half-time break with a healthy 4-03 to 1-01 lead, a
lead that would ultimately prove too big. Lauren McGarry had opened the scoring
with a well taken point before St. Farnan’s took control. It was Lauren again
who narrowed the gap with a shot to the top corner, to keep the girls in touch.
A
much improved second half saw the home side score ten unanswered points,
keeping the visitors scoreless for the half hour. Central to this comeback were
the O’ Sullivan sisters, Caoimhe dominated at centre back while Cliodhna helped
herself to five points from play from midfield. Attracta Halloran was also
prominent contributing four points while the energetic Sarah McCormack pitched
in with her first point in adult football. There were impressive performances
too from Ellen Given, and Aislinn Doggett in defence, and Ellen Prior was very
influential on the half forward line. Despite their best efforts, however, the
girls couldn’t find that precious equalising score and eventually lost by the
narrowest of margins 1-11 to 4-03. Team; Leah Kerrigan, Amy Hampson, Grace
Molloy, Aislinn Doggett, Caoimhe O’ Sullivan, Ellen Given, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan
(0-05), Shona Dalton, Sarah McCormack (0-01), Attracta Halloran (0-04), Ellen
Prior, Lauren McGarry (1-01), Éilis Burke, Ciara McDermott.
Their
second assignment was an away tie against St. Pat’s last Sunday. Another
blustery day meant that conditions played a major part. Our girls started well,
and with the wind behind them, had established a substantial lead of 4-08 to
1-01 at half time. It was particularly pleasing to note that all six forwards
and both midfielders got on the scoresheet.. Attracta Halloran was in top form
again scoring five points. There were also fine scores from Ellen Prior,
Aislinn Doggett, Sarah McCormack, Leah Kerrigan, Lauren McGarry, Jessica
Halloran and Cliodhna O’ Sullivan. The conditions meant that a strong defensive
display was needed as the hosts piled on the pressure. Nadine Deering, Holly
Gilligan and Gráinne Redmond stood steadfast while Beibhinn Harte made some
excellent saves in goals. Having kept the attack at bay for the opening period,
the pressure told and St. Pat’s scored 3-03 without reply. It took a brilliant
team move leading to an Attracta Halloran point that eventually settled the
nerves and saw the girls secure their first win of the year, 5-09 to 4-04,
Team:
Beibhinn Harte, Grace Molloy (Nadine Deering), Kaela Kerrigan, Eimear
Callaghan, Gráinne Redmond, Caoimhe O’ Sullivan (Amy Deering), Holly Gilligan,
Cliodhna O’ Sullivan (2-00), Sarah McCormack (0-01), Ellen Prior (0-01),
Attracta Halloran (0-05), Aislinn Doggett (0-02), Leah Kerrigan (0-01) (Amy
Hampson), Lauren McGarry (1-00), Jessica Halloran (1-00).
Warriors Festival
Committee Sponsorship
Our young hurlers and management would like to
extend a big thank you to the Warriors Festival Committee for the very generous
donation to hurling made by the last week. This money will be used to invest in
equipment and training gear and will allow the club continue its ambition to
have an underage hurling team competing at all levels in the county.
Appropriately the first team to avail of this investment will be our U13s, who
are taking part in the Táin Championship over the next few months. A special
word of gratitude goes to Emer Bree for all her work with the application.
Minor Football
Our minor football team
started their campaign with an away fixture against Coolaney/Mullinabreena on
Monday 18th March. This was a very close encounter with never more
than a couple of points between the teams. Our youthful team, containing three
under 16s, acquitted themselves very well but went down to a late goal by our
hosts for a final score of Coolera/Strandhill 1.08. Coolaney/Mullinabreena
3.05.
Team; Cian Connell, Niall
Davey, Jack Murphy, Sam MacDermott, Fiachra Staunton, Donagh Flynn(0.1),Oran
McDonagh(0.1), Keelan Harte(1.3),Cormac Murphy, C Flynn(0.1), Liam Gilligan,
Conor Keane, Josh Gilligan(0.2).
Kiernan Cup
The senior footballers
played host to Naomh Molaise Gaels in the quarter final of the Kiernan Cup last
Saturday.
It
proved to be a difficult opening to the season, leading to a 2-12 to 0-04
defeat. Better days, no doubt, lie ahead.
Dermot Molloy Hurling
League.
Our
senior hurlers took to the field on Sunday to take on St. Mary’s of Carrick in
the Dermot Molloy Hurling League. After a tough battle, the visitors came out
on top, 2-18 to 3-09. Next up is an away tie against Calry St. Joseph’s on Saturday
(30th) at 5.00pm.
