Our Minor Boys finished their underage campaigns in fine style last Saturday afternoon, winning the Minor B Championship, when they got the better of Drumcliffe Rosses Point in a fantastic match befitting any final.  The game started in a cagey manner, with both teams well drilled and putting their main scorers in possession.   Swapped scores were the order of the first quarter, then Marys took the initiative when a looping shot from Jay Cox dropped into the net.   This spurred the Drumcliffe team and they controlled the rest of the half closing the St Marys advantage to a single point.   This pattern continued in the early stages of the second half and Marys were staring at a 5 point deficit.   A well taken goal from Hubert Gilvarry reduced the Drumcliffe lead to a point, but almost immediately Drumcliffe netted themselves to regain the margin.   Things looked bleak, then the character of this side came to the fore and they dragged themselves back.   The teams went toe to toe, looking for a decisive score.   Marys got possession near their own goal and this was the move of the match which ended with Jimmy Monaghan receiving a perfect pass.   He did not hesitate, just powered the ball to the roof of the net, levelling the scores.

The concluding moments of the final were simply incredible.   Full back Darragh Cawley moved forward and gave Marys a 1 point lead with 2 minutes to go.  Thereafter Drumcliffe laid siege to the Marys goal with our guys defending as though their lives depended upon it.   Time and time again the Drumcliffe lads looked to be through, yet disciplined defending repelled everything.   Then in the last move of the game, an intelligent crossfield ball released space for a Drumcliffe forward. His shot was heroically blocked by either Jack Teape or Anthony Fidgeon, even the lads themselves don’t know, such was their determination.   The final whistle then sounded and so ended a great final where both sides did their clubs proud.   The final score was 4-11 to 3-13, a one point victory.

St Marys squad for the game comprised Jack Teape, Liam O’Kelly-Lynch, Darragh Cawley, Donal Keaveny, Anthony Fidgeon, Shane Muldowney, Finn Young, Michael Munnelly, Tom Gavin, Eamon Flynn, Patrick Maher (captain), Hubert Gilvarry, Jimmy Monaghan, Aidan Campbell, Jay Cox, Paul Gallagher, Marc O’Hehir, Fergal O’Kelly-Lynch and Craig Farrell.   Team Manager Shane Nealon was ably assisted by Dan Furey, Francis Fidgeon and Hubert Gilvarry.

Elsewhere in the club, the boys Feile side recorded another win to get them through to the semi-final.   It was a tight affair and ended in a 1 point victory 2-06 to 2-05.   The Junior squad continues preparation for their final.
