Sligo recorded their first victory in this years Philly McGuiness competition when accounting for a Fermanagh team who despite trailing by 6 points at one point in the second half were one point behind going into 4 minutes of added time.

That Sligo was in that position at that time could be put down to failure to adapt to the new Mark rules and over elaboration when in front of the posts.

As is the way with the modern game both sides played with one or two men inside and every other player all over the park. Despite the very heavy rain the night previous the pitch was in excellent condition. Red Óg Murphy got Sligo off the mark with a free after the industrious Joseph Keaney was fouled. Sean Cassidy. Cassidy and Conor Love were providing a good outlet for the Fermanagh lads but their shooting was off. Red, scored the next two points from free and a point from play after an excellent turn. Callum Jones scored a free followed by a shot by wing back Glenn Treacey to draw the teams level in the 23rd minute. There was a disallowed goal from Sligo which provided debate. A long delivery in was fetched by Murphy and he indicated he wished to take the mark but continued to play and drove to the roof of the net. Initially it appeared the goal would stand but the linesman quite rightly pointed out that the kick inside had come from inside the 45. Then the discussion should the goal stand started however a hop ball from where the initial kick in decided the passage of play.

Gavin Gorman scored from play which was followed up by a wide from Fermanagh. From the next play Murphy and Seán Carroll started a move from inside their half and Murphy finished to the bottom right corner of the net at the dressingroom end to leave the half time score 1-4 v 0-3.

From the throw in Sligo extended that lead with a Murphy point from play, quickly followed by Cassidy free. Alan Reilly came into his own after and scored Sligos remaining points of the half with 3 from play. By the 14th minute Sligo were leading by 6 points from frees by Jones and a nice point from play by Love and two excellent points from play by Cassidy had reduced the deficit to 1. Alan Reilly scored his 4th in the half after winning a free himself and Sligo hung on for victory.
