Sligo got their promotion chase back on with a hard fought win in a very windy Wexford on Saturday afternoon. The first few minutes of this fixture told a very different story from the previous weekends fixture and in the first 35 minutes Sligo put in their best performance of the campaign.

In the first 6 minutes of the start and against the raging wind Sligo could have been three goals to the good but had to settle for 1-1 with Darragh Cummins getting the first goal in the third minute. Sligo were controlling the game and Barry Gorman made the Wexford keeper produce a fine save two minutes later which was cleared downfield. John Francis Carr got a point when his goalbound effort a minute later was deflected over the cross bar again by Meegan.

Sligo did not score for the next 21 minutes but were keeping Wexford at bay with Meegan scoring a long range point from play a highlight. A Sligo attack on the right side saw the ball transferred quickly across field where Seán Carrabine soloed past two defenders and finished into the bottom right of the net. Aidan Devaney would score from a free from the ground with the breeze so bad that the ball had to be held in position by Carrabine, a job the Keelan Cawley also performed in the second half. By the half time whistle Sligo were in the strong postion of being 2-2 v 0-6 up.

However as has been the case all year we found it more difficult to play with the elements though in this case we were still in total control till injury time. We got the first two scores of the half from Barry Gorman and Red Óg Murphy with Ben Brosnan hitting back with frees. Liam Gaughan drove an excellent score over in the 46th minute but as in Wicklow we did not score again till injury time but this time we held Wexford at bay till the 71st minute when Brosnan pounced for a goal. Sligo responded immediately to put a 2 point margin between the teams from Carrabine. Wexford kept on trying and a Seán Nolan point in the 42th minute was the final play of the game and Sligo held on for a deserved victory.

Sligo travel to Carlow in two weeks time for the next round of the league.
