Sligo hurlers have in recent years, ‘contributed to the cause’ by supporting ‘Breakfast mornings’ and ‘last-man-standing’ fundraisers but such initiatives are impossible at this time. This year we plan to build on the good-will & enthusiasm that already exists around hurling throughout the County and to that effect we are establishing ‘Friends of Sligo Hurling’. This is an initiative that you can be part of and proud of. Friends of Sligo Hurling & the Sligo Senior Hurling Panel are launching ‘iSupport Sligo Hurling’, which involves the hurlers embarking on a virtual journey from Sligo GAA in Scarden to Sligo GAA, Gaelic Park in New York... ‘Sligo2Sligo’.
One of New York GAA’s leading lights is of course Larry McCarthy, a member of Sligo GAA in New York who has recently been inaugurated as the 40th President of the Association.
From Coney Island to Coney Island, Metal Man to Statue of Liberty, IT Sligo to Setton Hall University, Clayton Hotel to Gerry’s Place... the starting gun has been fired! On-line donations towards the mileage covered by the hurlers will be provided by Friends of Sligo Hurling and anyone who wishes to support this worthy cause. Each Player will walk, run and crawl to accumulate the required 5000 kilometres!
