Easkey lived up to
the favourites tag for this year's senior hurling championship with a very
comprehensive victory over Calry/ St. Joseph's on Saturday last in Hazelwood.
In balmy sunshine
the Easkey players treated their supporters to a point scoring festival. The
opening score of the game came from Fionn Moylan who followed quickly with a
goal. Finnian Cawley added another Easkey point before Kevin Gilmartin
got Calry's opening score.
Rory Mc Hugh and
Thomas Cawley for Easkey exchanged points with Calry's Niall Mc Dermott and
Kevin Gilmartin but the Seasiders were gradually building control and adding to
the scoreboard with points from a range of players including corner back
Bernard Feeney.
Calry veteran Darragh
Cox was rewarded for his hard work with a fine point from play but by the time
Fionn Moylan got his second goal Easkey led 2-17 to 0-4.
In response Michael
Callaghan caught an Adam Kenna free and fired past Andrew Kilcullen in goal for
Easkey but Easkey then added to further points to leave the half time score at
Easkey 2-19, Calry 1-4.
After the break
Easkey introduced Thomas Rolston for Bernard Feeney and Shane Molloy for Niall
Kilcullen. James Weir opened Easkey's tally in the second
half, followed by another point for Darragh Cox.
It was clear that
there could only be one winner in this contest. Calry, however to their credit
battled to the end. Kevin Gilmartin and Brian Shannon worked hard in
midfield and Darragh Cox got three points from play in the game. Declan Reidy
had a busy evening in goals with a huge number of puckouts and also made some
excellent saves.
Easkey were very
driven with players in all positions eager to get on the scoring sheet.
Ronan Molloy had a number of fine catches of the sliotar from puck outs and was
instrumental in many of his side's scores.
