It was a case of Geevagh v St John’s
multiplied by three on the fields of play this
weekend. Our Senior Lads retained their intermediate Championship by defeating
John’s by a four-point margin on Saturday afternoon last. Played in Coola in
ideal conditions, a goal in this game was always going to be the deciding
factor. True to form it was, thankfully it was our lads grabbed the crucial
goal from wing back Vincent Corcoran. Early scores from the boot of Kenneth
Sweeney saw our lads lead 0.02 to 0.00 after ten minutes. John’s levelled
things moments later and went two points up before county man Donal Conlon
brought it back to 0.04 to 0.03, which ended up being the half time score.
The 2nd half started with John’s stretching their lead to two
points again before that all important goal arrive, this score give our lads a
bad needed lift and they powered on kicking kicking two points without reply to
leave the score at 1.05 to 0.05 entering the last ten minutes of this nervous
affair.
Both sides swapped points in the final stages of the game, but as
mentioned earlier it was the goal that was the difference in the end.
Final Score: Gaobhach CLG 1.08, St John’s 0.07.

Next up in the
Geevagh / John’s weekend saga was an U.16 Girls Championship Final clash.
Played in Curry, our girls got off to a great start going 2.1 to 0.0 after ten
minutes, John’s had their purple patch scoring 2.1 of their own without reply.
Geevagh dominated the remainder of the half scoring 1.4 to go in at half time
by 3.5 to 2.2, our goals coming from Grainne (2) and Leanne. Some great
defending in the first half from Rachel, Ailbhe and Ava kept the John’s
forwards at bay. The Girls first half efforts took their toll on our young stars
midway through the 2nd half with John’s dominating a lot of the
positions, they struck for two second half penalty goals to put them in the
driving seat, but true to form our Girls battled back again with goals of their
own to swing the game back in their favour, however John’s struck for their
eight goal of this entertaining affair to run out winners on an 8.08 to 6.08
final score line.
Great credit to all players and the management team on an
entertaining year,

The third and final
part of the saga was an U.17 Championship semi-final in Stenson Park on
Sunday evening last. Played in blustery conditions our GSTM lads struck first
with points from Dara and John before John’s opened their account. The old
cliché of goals win games applied to this game, with John’s scoring five to our
lads three. John’s scored three of their five goals in a ten-minute spell to put
them 3.02 to 0.2 ahead, our Lads to their credit battled away and were rewarded
with three goals from Shane (2) and Dara. Half Time score was level at 3.03 apiece.
Our Lads started the 2nd half with a bit more
fire in their bellies, some great points from Conor (3), Lee (2) and Kyle saw
our lads stretch their advantage, before John’s struck for the first of their
two second half goals to knock the wind out of our lad’s sails.
Final score read GSTM 3.10. St John’s 5.08.
Despite conceding those three first half goals our lads
showed great spirit to bring the game level and indeed lead for the majority of
the 2nd half.
Thanks to all the players and the management team for their
works throughout the season. Best of luck to the lads who are out of the U.17
grade and will be playing adult football in 2023.
