The Sligo senior footballers stayed on course for promotion continues with a solid win over Wexford in Markievicz Park on Sunday.

Having established a solid lead halfway through the first half, the home side never looked in danger of not getting the win but they will be disappointed to have conceded two goals in the final quarter  in a division where scoring differences could still be a crucial factor.

Sligo opened the scoring when Sean Carrabine converted a free for a foul on Alan Reilly in the first move of the game.

John Tubritt equalised and then was on hand to take advantage of some hesitancy in the Sligo defence to raise the first green flag of the contest to give his side a 1-1 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes.

It would be over 20 minutes however before the visitors scored again with Sligo asserting dominance in the middle of the field and converting that onto the scoreboard with three points from Carrabine, two from Niall Murphy and one from hard working midfielder Paul Kilcoyne,

Tubritt got one back for the visitors but Sligo added a further two points - one each again from Carrabine and Murphy to take a four point lead into the break, 0-9 to 1-2

Sligo picked up where they left off with Alan Reilly scoring a fine team point after the ball was worked up from his own backline.

Although Mark Rossiter notched a point for Wexford from a free immediately afterwards, it was all Sligo for the next 20 minutes as they added points from Paul Kilcoyne, David Quinn, Pat Spillane, Sean Carrabine (2) and Paul McNamara as well as a goal from Spillane to lead by 1-16 to 1-3 with ten minutes to play.

Wexford kept plugging away and despite being down to 14 men with Eoghan Nolan dismissed for two bookings, they managed to claim two late goals through Cian Hughes and Niall Hughes as well as points from Paudi Hughes, Glen Malone and three Mark Rossiter frees

Sligo's added four points in that time from Murphy, Luke Towey and two from raiding half time substitute Mark Walsh.
