Ladies football is back in full stride and
all age groups are busy with Championship football. The U12’s have been training hard on
Tuesdays and Fridays and open their campaign this Monday with a visit to St
Michaels. The U14’s then play
Tourlestrane on Tuesday. The U16’s have
had 1 of their 3 Championship matches already when beaten by Tourlestrane. The Minor Championship has yet to commence
and the Intermediates found the going tough when defeated by St Michaels. Their remaining 2 games are this Sunday
against Eoghan Rua and then the following Sunday against Curry.
The Senior men’s side played
Tourlestrane in the final section game of the Championship. Given Marys had already won the section, the
game was not of great importance. This
showed as St Marys were sluggish in the first half and although playing a lot
better after the break, Tourlestrane held their lead and won the day by 16
points to 8. St Marys now have a break
for a couple of weeks while the play-offs for the remaining qualifying places
are decided.
Our Junior side faced Shamrock
Gaels in a tightly contested match in the Junior A Championship match on Friday evening. A couple of new players were welcomed into
the squad including Peter Mullin who was back after a few years away from
football. Following a bright start Mary's lost their rhythm and found
themselves 5 points down at half time. The second half started with Shamrock
Gaels taking some excellent long distance points, before a Gareth Blake penalty
brought some hope for the Mary's team. Gradually our lads had a greater urgency
in their game and we earned a draw at 2-14 each. We face Owenmore in the next round. This will be a vital match as the winners should
be rewarded with a place in the Championship final.
In Bord na nÓg, the Minors had a hard fought win against Easkey last
Tuesday evening at Kent Pk. Despite
falling behind in the early stages they fought hard to win by 4-7 to 3-8. Next up is Calry St Joseph's on Thursday
away at Hazelwood. The U16s had a
convincing win against Castleconnor on Wednesday last on a scoreline of 6-13 to
2-05. This team had a very slow start
to the season, but persevered and are now starting to show their
potential. Hard work on the training
pitch is playing off. They now face
Curry in their last group game on Monday 1st September in a match which will
decide the play off placings. The U14s
have a home game against Coolaney Mullinabreena on this Wednesday. The U12s had a good win against Coolera
Strandhill last Tuesday at Kevinsfort in Group A. That was the last group game before the
Festival of Football finals for Group A and B in Markievicz Pk on this
Saturday. Group C and D finals day
takes place on Saturday week 6 September again in Markievicz Pk. Please support all our teams where possible
as all the grades enter in to the knockout stages of their competitions. Best of luck to all our players heading back
to school and in particular those making the big step into Secondary
school. We encourage all our players to
get involved in schools/ colleges football.
This is a great way to settle into a new environment and of course
continue developing as a player.
The Club Cycle is scheduled for
Saturday September 13th and will give cyclists a 55km option through
the Maugherow peninsula with those wanting an added challenge having the choice
of extending the cycle to 80km by travelling around the Gleniff Horseshoe. It promises to be a great day out and thanks
to the many people who have already confirmed their participation. A Social will be held in the Clubhouse that
evening and all Members are welcome to attend.
St Marys extends sympathy to Co.Board chairman Joe Taffee and his wife
Ann on the death of Mrs. Kathleen Flanagan of Castlerea.
