County Finalists take part in the “Garavogue Challenge”

As the Finalists prepare for the Kennedys Intermediate and Belfry Senior Championship Finals on Sunday 2nd October, players took time out to test their kicking skills in the “Garavogue Challenge”. Curious Saturday afternoon shoppers looked on as players from Geevagh, St. Molaise Gaels, Tourlestrane and St. Mary’s attempted to kick points from over 50 metres across the Garavogue river in the heart of Sligo Town.

The challenge was part of Sligo County Board’s launch of the Club Championship Finals which take place in Markeivicz Park on Sunday 2nd October in conjunction with Sponsors the Belfry and Kennedys Bars.

Inter-county Referee, Marty Duffy was on hand to oversee the competition along with two umpires and “Hawkeye” had to be called for on more than one occasion. Luckily North West Adventures Stand up paddlers were also on stand-by in the river to retrieve the many wayward footballs that were heading downstream for the Atlantic!

Cheered on by supporters from their Clubs, Cic Fada specialist Fintan Ruddy from St. Mary’s claimed bragging rights in the Senior challenge over Tourlestrane’s James Leonard while Alan McLoughlin from St. Molaise Gaels finally overcame Geevagh’s Pat Hughes in the Intermediate challenge as their tie went to sudden death.
