Benson Cup
Our seniors made the short trip to Connolly Park on Saturday last for
Round Two of the Benson Cup against Owenmore Gaels. In perfect conditions both
teams served up a feast of football, with some excellent flowing moves and
point scoring. After a low scoring first half which saw the teams level at 1-05
the game opened up in the second half and eventually saw Coolera-Strandhill
take the spoils 3-14 to 1-13.
Owenmore Gaels were first to settle and notched up a three point lead
before Mark McCallion goaled for Coolera-Strandhill. Owenmore Gaels replied
immediately with a goal of their own. Points from Barry O’ Mahony (0-2), Damien
Fallon, Diarmuid Mulcahy and the very impressive David Kilrehill brought the
first half to a close, with the teams level. The second half was an
entertaining affair, with high quality scores on both sides. Mark McCallion,
Barry O’ Mahony and Seán Murphy in particular caused the home defence endless
problems aided by Diarmuid Mulcahy, Karl O’ Neill, and Frankie Flynn (on for the
injured Ciaran Moloney). In defence there were solid performances, led by David
McGee, Gary Cawley, Ronan Redmond and David Kilrehill, while Oisin Conway made
crucial saves in goals. The Benson Cup takes a break now until May 13th.
Next up for the seniors is a home league fixture against St. Michael’s on Good
Friday (April 14th) Team. Oisin Conway, David Kilrehill (0-01),
David McGee, James Hampson (Karl O’ Reilly 0-01), Seán Callaghan (Mark
Comerford), Gary Cawley, Ronan Redmond, Aaron O’ Boyle, Ciaran Moloney (Frankie
O’ Flynn 0-01), Mark McCallion (2-01), Barry O’ Mahony (0-05)(James Kilrehill),
Diarmuid Mulcahy (0-02), Karl O’ Neill (1-00), Damien Fallon (0-01), Seán
Murphy (0-02).
Under 16
Our u16 boys

Friday evening. This was an
entertaining encounter which ended in a victory for a strong Gaels side on a

outcomes in the future starting with our next game at home to Eastern

Under 14
Coolera/Strandhill U-14s got their league
campaign off to a promising but ultimately unsuccessful start losing to
Calry/St. Josephs on a score line of 5-10 to 4-06 in sunny Ransboro on Sunday morning.
The visitors got off to a strong start putting
over 1-04 without reply in the first 10 minutes before Coolera settled and
responded with 1-01. Calry led by 5 points at half time and extended their lead
with some good long range points early in the second half. Coolera got more possession
mid way through the half and converted a goal and 3 points to draw closer with
10 minutes to go, but further points and a
well taken goal towards the end clinched victory for the visitors. Best for the
home team was Ciaran Langan and Ross Doherty who worked tirelessly in midfield
and Cormac Murphy who scored some well taken goals. The boys’ next outing is
away to Tourlestrane on April 7th. Team;
Cathal Morahan, Owen McKirdy, Jamie
Kilfeather, Ryan Young, Jamie Walsh, Rory Kinnane, Ross Doherty, Ciaran Langan,
Conor Keane, Donnacha Beirne, Andrew Lynch, Mark McDaniel, Cormac Murphy, Subs

Herbert, Aaron Lindsay, Luke McTernan.
Ladies
Spring League
Our junior ladies team made its debut in the ranks of adult
football with an away league fixture against Shamrock Gaels. Fielding a very
young inexperienced team, the girls acquitted themselves well, played with
great spirit, but ultimately came up short of victory against a team that won
the junior league last year. Quick to settle into the game, their efforts were
rewarded with a point from Mary Stenson. Shamrock Gaels responded well scoring
three points before gaoling from the penalty spot. Two Attracta Halloran points
before half time left our girls trailing 1-07 to 0-03 at the interval. The
second half began with Coolera-Strandhill exerting pressure on the home side,
and another Mary Stenson point narrowed the margin. She quickly added her third
before Attracta Halloran scrambled the ball across the line for a well deserved
goal. At this point a comeback appeared on the cards, but to their credit the
hosts regained control with some well taken points. The game was marred by a
nasty injury to Gaels forward Rachel Boyd who suffered a suspected broken
collar bone in an accidental collision. There were impressive performances from
Kaela Kerrigan, Jessica Halloran and Nadine Deering in defence, ably assisted
by Caoimhe O’ Sullivan, and Cara Gilligan, while Sarah Lindsay was steady in
goals. The midfield pair of Laura Joyce and Mary Stenson (0-03) worked
tirelessly and in attack Eilis Callaghan was outstanding from start to finish.
Attracta Halloran (1-02), Eimear McCallion, Ciara Healy and Ciara McCormack
were also impressive. Gráinne Redmond and the returning Claire Stenson were
both introduced at half time to great effect. The girls play Owenmore Gaels
next Sunday at 10.00 in Ransboro.
