Benson Cup

St Johns 1 – 12,  St Patricks 1 - 7

Our senior footballers got their season off to a great start with a hard-fought victory over our visitors from West Sligo, St Patricks, Dromard at a wind-swept Stenson Park, Cuilbeg on Saturday afternoon. On a day when the conditions made scoring very difficult both sides showed great determination and skill to serve up an entertaining game. Our groundsmen are to be complimented on having the playing surface in such good condition after the previous heavy rain. St Johns lined out showing many absentees from last years championship team but the newcomers, many of whom were making their debut at senior level, stood up to the task and acquitted themselves well.                                               St Johns had first use of the strong  breeze and took an early lead with points from Enda Roche and a brace from Ian Rossitor before St Pats scored their first point after 10 mins. David Burke and Hayden Cawley extended the home team lead to 4 points before St Pats struck for a goal against the run of play and followed this up with a further point to level the scores at 0-5 to 1-2 after 22 mins. St Johns finished the half stronger with a point from Tommy Kelly and 3 more from Rossitor’s trusty boot, giving them a 4 point lead, 0 – 9 to 1 – 2, at the break but having to face a strong wind in the second half.                              A further Rossiter point extended the lead but then St Pats quickly sent over 3 point before Burke scored his second point for the home team. St Pats came back with 2 points cutting the difference to the minimum before substitute Conor King scored the home team’s goal. An excellent pointed free from out on the right by Rossitor left the home team with a 5 point lead at the final whistle. During that second half when playing into the breeze, St Johns showed great character to withstand the constant St Pats attacks with all of the defenders coming up to the mark as they fronted new goalkeeper Josh Mc Donagh who took off three top class saves.                                                               St Johns lineout ; Josh Mc Donagh; Jack Sayers, Enda Roche, Conor Sweeney; Jamie Grehan, Michael O’Hehir, Hayden Cawley; David Burke, Charlie Harrison; Adam Grace, Shane Stenson, Tommy Kelly; Ian Rossitor, Adam Scanlon, Andrew Kerr. Subs used, Cian Hough, Adam Grace, John Mc Nulty and James Gethins. We wish James Gethins a speedy recovery from his injury. A big thanks to John Greene for supplying the very welcome hot food for the players after the game.
