Feile Cup Winners St Johns U14 Girls

Our U14 girls did our club, and county, proud over the Feile weekend when they finished as winners of their cup competition. These girls epitomise what football is all about – belief, preparation and execution. They believed they could do it. They trained hard with focus. Then they pulled it off with style. A win against Scotland, while keeping them scoreless, was followed by a win over Drumcliffe–Rosses Point keeping them to 1 – 1. Next came a win against the club we were hosting Delaware County, Philadelphia restricting them to 0-2. This put our girls into a quarter final in Boyle against Calry-St Josephs where we overcame them by 6-5 to 0-1. After a brilliant Saturday evening’s entertainment in Cuilbeg where we had BBQ and live entertainment, we set off for Castlerea to play Gloustershire in the semi-final. After a tough start, taking knocks and conceding a point our girls let the football do the talking and the opposition never scored again while St Johns registered 3-5 to qualify for the final where we met our visitors again Delco Gaels. With both teams hungry for the title, St Johns got off to a great start with the aid of the breeze scoring 3-1 by half time. Delco came back strongly, scoring 2-5 but our girls tacked on 2 points to maintain their lead even into the seven minutes of added time. So the girl’s dreams of being Feile Champions had become a reality and it was just reward for all the hard work put in by the girls and their dedicated mentors Keith and Olivia Mc Loughlin and Liam Kelly.

Under 12 Girls Shield Winners; Congratulations and well done to our Under 12 Girls team and their mentors on their great achievement in winning the shield competition in the League when they defeated St Molaise Gaels.

Under 14 Boys League Winners; On Thurs evening last our U.14 boys team secured the league title in a dramatic final, when they overcame the challenge of a gallant Shamrock Gaels team by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 3 – 9 to 3 – 8. Having played with the aid of the strong breeze the Gaels led by 1 – 8 to 1 – 2 at half time but some positional changes by the Johns management had the desired effect and gradually they reduced the deficit before taking the lead. But the Riverstown boys were not going to roll over easily and they came back to regain the lead with a fine goal. Straight from the kickout our boys moved the ball swiftly upfield and struck a great goal to leave them 2 points ahead with only a few minutes left to play. Some staunch defending kept the Gaels to only a point, leaving St Johns winners as the Referee Joe Hynes blew the final whistle. After the game Cathal Martin presented the cup to co-captains Corey O’Dowd and Seamus Casey to great applause from the strong St Johns support.
