Calry St Joseph’s took in the honours in the final of the
first ever U19 championship competition played in Sligo with a hard fought five-point
victory over a game Coolaney Mullinabreena team at Markievicz Park on Tuesday.
The U19 grade was established to provide competitive game
time for those players that might not yet have the opportunity to get competitive
game time in adult football and this final was an entertaining game with plenty
of ability on show with a real championship cut.
Coolaney Mullinabreena had the best of the opening period
and went into half time comfortably ahead bolstered by a well finished Eoin Barrett goal.
Calry St Joseph’s however emerged a rejuvenated side after the break and
took the game to their opponents led by captain and midfielder Daire O’Boyle.
In the end the Hazelwood’s sides energy prevailed and they managed
to get ahead and hold the lead to finish with a two point margin, 0-11 to 1-9,
in a tight finish where extra time looked on the cards right up to the end.
