Team news:
Our Intermediate team played a historic first game under lights at Quigabar on Saturday evening last, in a challenge game against Ardnaree Sarsfields in front of a great crowd on a cool but dry night. It was a memorable occasion for everyone present but in particular for all the committee members who have been so involved to see the new flood lights lit and the new clubhouse open. This was evident with all who turned out the previous night to help with the final preparations and tidy up.
A minutes silence was held before the game as a mark of respect for the late Josephine Kepel whose funeral took place on Sunday. Condolences to all her family. May she rest in peace.
After the game the presentation of medals and awards took place with special guest, Pat Spillane in attendance. Club chairman, Cathal Mullaney welcomed the Kerry great and former RTE Gaelic football pundit and thanked him for coming to present the medals to the 2022 U15 team and the 2021 Minor team. In his opening remarks he welcomed everyone to the new clubhouse for the first time and hoped it will be a place we can enjoy many happy nights in the future. He acknowledged all the committee members, anyone who brought a young person to training or purchased a block or brick along the way. He thanked the meticulous Declan Rouse and all his team for their superb work in bringing the project to completion. He recognised the wonderful contribution that all our club sponsors make to the running of the club and to the Sligo Leader Partnership Company and the Sports Capital Programme whose investment in the clubhouse was vital.
Finally he said to all the young people there to always enjoy their football, always be proud of where they are from and be proud to wear their club crest, whether it’s win or lose.
Pat Spillane, in his remarks said the GAA club is the glue that keeps rural communities together. He said if you look after the young people they will come through. He congratulated the Club on the amazing facilities. He said it is a credit to all the people and the community coming together.
A number of special club awards took place after the team presentations to club players and members who were involved with the County. They were;
- Brian Duffy, who was on the 2021 Minor Championship winning team. John Paul Carden, who was a selector on that team.
- Eoin Tuffy, who was captain of the 2022 Sligo U16 team, who won the Fr. Manning Cup.
- Gavin Duffy, along with his brother Brian, who were on the 2022 Sligo U20 Connacht Champions team. Con O’Meara, Cian Mulrooney, and Bradley Nealon who were all part of that U20 backroom team.
